Every 15 Minutes

Image
Did you know that every 15 minutes a teenager dies in an alcohol-related wreck? It's a sad reality that occurs 96 times every day.  Schools all over the country hold events that demonstrate the tragic results of teens driving under the influence. The links & videos in this post give a glimpse into what the program entails.  Even though the students & parents know that the event is staged, it is a very emotional experience for all involved.  Parents frequently break down when they go to the hospital to retrieve their kids or to the morgue to "identify" their child.  It becomes all to real in the moment. If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of these demonstrations, I strongly encourage you to do so.  I wish every teenager had an opportunity to participate in one of these events.  I was once in a car with someone who was very inebriated.  I too had been drinking- although I definitely was not old enough to legally do so.  I did not think any of us were goi

Makin' Split Pea Soup With Cookie

Image
Yup- I used an entire ham to make split pea soup.  I'll not run out of split pea soup anytime soon. YAY!  I love split pea soup- and bean soup. Share your soup recipes below.  And be sure to come back next week for more cooking with Cookie.   If you have any recipes you would like me to feature, comment below.  Who knows?  Maybe I will make it.  If I get enough responses, I might even do a live cooking video.

Let's Hang Out At the Riverside Discovery Center for Visit the Zoo Day

Image
Tomorrow is Visit the Zoo Day, so I thought it would be a great day for a virtual trip to the Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Zoo.   I think it is important to make two visits to a zoo.  One reason I feel this way is because sometimes the animals are sleeping & not out for viewing.  Also, I have found that many times the animals are not available because the zoo keepers have them out of their enclosures for routine care.  Something else I have noticed as I travel around is there is typically at least one enclosure undergoing maintenance or construction. The first time I went to the Riverside Discovery Center was in 2018 when I was working there for three months.  I took a lot of pictures during this trip, but at the time I did not think I would be blogging anymore. When I went back in 2020 during another work assignment I had begun my new blog , so I took a lot more pictures.  I wanted my viewers to feel like they had actually visited the zoo.  Soooo...I took a ton of pictures from every p

Bonus Post= "Christmas Star" Misconceptions

Image
Many people are hyped up about Saturn & Jupiter appearing as a double planet.  This is being referred to as the " Christmas Star ."  The star that people are referencing was a one time event  occurring at the time of Christ.  It was supposed to be a beacon leading to Jesus- but what was it really?  Learn more in the video above.

Let's Make Broccoli Cheese Fritters!

Image
I love to cook, and today I want to share a recipe I am trying.  I explained how to make it in the video above-- Of course, I forgot to mention that you are supposed to put parmesan cheese in it- but all of the ingredients are shown below. It is possible to leave the cheese out if you don't like cheese or just don't have any.  Or you could use some other type of cheese.  I believe that recipes are meant to be altered.  If they weren't, we would never have any variety & we would be eating the same thing all the time.  In fact, the directions in this recipe suggest other modifications you could make- as you can see here. Once you get everything all mixed up, it's time to throw it in the oven.  You could use this as an appetizer, a light meal or a side dish to go along with a meat.  Let me know if you tried this recipe in the comments below.  How did you like it?   I tried it right after I baked it.  It tasted OK- I think it might be good with fish-- maybe Alaskan Salm

Next Stop- Nebraska

Image
Regardless of what you may have been told, Nebraska is a very interesting place.  Of course, it is well known for it's endless fields of corn.  But there are a lot of unique features to Braska. It seems there are bunnies everywhere.  I even saw one on my way into work one night. You can even find some pretty flowers there at times. While there is no need to be overly concerned, it is prudent to keep an eye on the skies. Storms can occur at any time. But there are some beautiful rainbows that can follow. Unusual sights are frequent.  I saw the Planter's Bus once. And then there's this.   But that's not all there is to Braska.  Be sure to come back next Saturday to do more Braska sight seeing.

Mask Etiquette

Image
I have noticed several things over the past several months of wearing a mask full time.  Just a few of my observations are mentioned in the video below. I typically remove my mask when I am outside away from other people.  One reason is between my asthma & claustrophobia it is easier for me to breathe without it.  These issues are mild for me, but it is still difficult for me to breathe with the mask at times so I take it off every chance I get. I have also discovered that when it is cold, the masks tend to deteriorate more quickly because of the condensation created when warm breath meets the cold air.  Plus, I love breathing the fresh winter air- it is more enjoyable without a mask. Feel free to comment on your experiences & observations below.

A Brief Jaunt Through Colorado

Image
After I had finished playing in Utah, I traveled through Colorado. I got stopped in a line of traffic on going up a mountain because of a wreck. After I had taken this video, traffic started moving again.  Unfortunately, I had some "car trouble."  Once I got that taken care of, I was on my way across Colorado again. I went to the Denver Museum of Nature & Science because they had an exhibit I wanted to check out.  At the time, I did not think I would be doing much more writing, so sadly I didn't take many pictures at the museum.  But if you ever go to Denver you should check it out because it's perty cool.

National Handwashing Awareness Week PSA

Image
I thought this would be a good topic during this pandemic since things are ramping up again.  Please pay attention to what you are doing & follow the safety guidelines. Even if you don't believe COVID is real & think it's all a hoax.  What does it really hurt to wash your hands, wear a mask & stay 6 feet from others.  Is it really that big of an inconvenience for you to think of the wellbeing of others?

Vernal, Utah, Random Pictures

Image
I had a pretty good time in Vernal, and I took some random pictures that I thought are pretty fun. The library there is pretty cool and they have some great programs for the kids. I didn't go to the theater but it sounds like they put on some pretty good shows there. I came across the post office. I found this garbage truck rather amusing- no doubt painted this way because of the abundance of dinosaur artifacts in the area. I stopped at Skeeter's Diner, which was a short distance out of town on the way to the Dinosaur National Monument. I would love to go to Vernal again sometime.  It is an interesting place.

COVID School Closings & Other COVID Disasters

Image
Schools are closing again as COVID ramps up.  Some schools never reinstituted physical classes.  Many people are having a hard time figuring out how to conduct home school.  It can be a difficult process, especially for those who have not had much experience managing their child's school work.  I think many have become used to relying on teachers to care for that task. If you have found yourself in the position of being your child's "teacher," it may be a bit of a challenge.  I want to assure you that you can succeed at helping your child learn.  And I would like to help in any way I can.  As mentioned in my video, I home schooled my daughter for several years.  I loved it & it came easy for me because I always wanted to be a teacher.  But that is not the case with everyone. If you are struggling to teach your child, feel free to reach out to me.  I will be happy to help you develop lesson plans & find unique learning activities that will be fun and interestin
