A Stroll Through Snow Canyon

Image
I was able to hang out in Snow Canyon State Park for a little while when I was in Utah.  The park actually has a road that makes for easy travel between Dammeron Valley and Ivins, two small towns in the area.  I didn't go on any of the trails, but it was awesome just to see the area.  It would be really cool to see it in the winter!

Freedom Friday- Learning Curve

Image
This weight loss adventure is keeping me on my toes.  I am figuring out what works for me & what doesn't.  I'm glad I have a health coach because I had gotten really frustrated & discouraged when I was trying to lose weight on my own & wasn't making much progress. I am happy that I have a total weight loss now of 22 pounds.  I also feel much better because I am not eating so much garbage.  I like healthier foods- it's just that I had such a habit of eating things that were not really good for me because they were convenient.  The funny thing is I don't really miss those things- so weird. Here's a challenge for you- make a healthy change in your life.  😁

What Day Is It?

If you have ever checked out my Facebook page, you know that I love to tell everyone what silly thing each day marks.  Like- today is National Milk Chocolate Day.  Thursday is National Lipstick Day, so I thought it would be fun to let everyone know that.  😁

The Elusive Arnetts

Image
I have hit a wall with Ilau's children.  The only information I can find about her daughter Gayle is the 1940 census that I already published twice.  There is another child that I can't find anything on except that his/her name was apparently Living. So, I will move on to the only sibling of my grandmother that I met- Lawrence, or Bud.  His full name was Lawrence William Arnett & he was born on July 31, 1909 in Siskiyou, California. The 1910 Siskiyou census records him as being 8 months old & living with his father William, mother Mary, sisters Illa & Dollie, and his father's mother Ora.   The 1920 Siskiyou census shows him living with his mother & father as well as Dolly & a brother named David.  Ilau had grown up & flown the nest & Ora had died. The 1930 Siskiyou census has him living with Ilau & Georgie Porgie at 20 years of age. I discovered a 1947 draft card for Lawrence just today that revealed he had married a woman named Cecelia. They

Grab A Snack & Do A Little Shopping At The Corner Station Deli And Co-op In Fairview, Utah

Image
There is a cute little co-op on the corner of State & 100th Streets in Fairview, Utah.  The Corner Station Deli And Co-op has all kinds of neat stuph that local artisans sell at the shop.  With all of the trinkets, blankets, jewelry, books, and even truffles- it would be easy to spend an entire day in this awesome store.   And if you need a rest- or a snack- just have a seat in the diner & chow down.  They have all kinds of salads, soups & salads.  They also have sodas, coffee & specialty drinks.  You might just wanna nibble on Grandma Nona's Fudge.  I hope you can go here someday.  I think you would really like this place.  Just don't forget to head over to the museum while you are in Fairview .

Freedom Friday Frustrations

Image
So, I have not lost any more weight yet- but I haven't gained any either, so that is good.  I mean, I felt like I was gaining weight by the minute before I started making changes in my habits.  I don't buy chips & junk like that anymore.  A lot of the stuph I used to eat doesn't even really appeal to me anymore.  Even my beloved Taco Bell is losing its appeal.  Yup- I said it.  LOL I mentioned some things in my video that I am eliminating from my diet.  I have also been eating less meat & am about ready to stop eating it all together.  I don't think God intended for us to eat meat in the first place anyway, so why bother.  I'm not bashing meat or trying to convince anyone else not to eat it.  I just feel like this is a good time for me to give it up since I don't feel deprived without it.  I had gone six months without eating meat about 20 years ago & I lost some weight during that time, so it might be a good move for me.  I discussed it with my heal

The Biggest Mistake

Image
What was she doing here? She looked around the room. How could she have let it get to this point? Here she was, three months pregnant and marrying him. She didn’t go to church, so she was being married by the Justice of the Peace—at the house where she got pregnant. She didn’t even get to wear what she wanted for her wedding day because his relatives kept calling her and telling her to wear something else. What in the world was she doing? He hadn’t even taken the time to buy her an engagement ring, not really. He bought one from his cousin for forty dollars, a used one. The transaction had taken place in the kitchen at his aunt’s house while she was sitting in the living room. She looked around again, flowers in hand. Her uncle would be coming in soon to get her and walk her down the aisle. What aisle? Who was she kidding? It was a yard, and an ugly yard at that. Her dad had stopped talking to her when she told him that she was going to marry this man. Man?! What Man?! He didn’t ev

Scandal In The Family Tree

Image
I am re-sharing the 1940 census that I previously included in my post about Ilau.  The reason I am doing this is because something caught my attention that I had not noticed before.  I found it interesting that Ilau's daughter, Vivian, had the last name of Arnett rather than Morrison.  I am assuming that this means that Ilau gave birth to Vivian after  she divorced Georgie Porgie & that George is not Vivian's father. I discovered a page from a high school yearbook that I believe to show Vivian.  I am not completely sure it is her because there are several Vivian Arnetts listed on Ancestry.com.  It appears she was involved in sports. She married Walter Little Jr. on February 21, 1943.  He was a Corporal in the US Marine Corp.  He went to the University of San Francisco & became an attorney.   A 1949 Alhambra, California, directory shows that Vivian became a stenographer- which makes sense since Walter was an attorney.   I do find it a little odd, though, that she is list

An Amazing Tour At The Fairview Museum of History and Art

Image
I could not believe I found such an awesome museum in this tiny little town.  This museum has so many artifacts, it consists of two buildings packed full of interesting things to see.  Plus, there are larger antique items outside!  And can you believe it?- There is not even a set admission fee.  Whatever you feel like donating is acceptable. You can view some of the museum's artifacts on their website .  But there is nothing like standing next to the skeleton of a huge mammoth.  It was so awesome!  I am so glad I stopped in this little town & even happier that I decided to check out this museum.

Jay Bob

Image
The morning sun shines through the glass. I sit alone, contemplating my day. Tasks await as I spin away the time just sitting here. I conclude in my mind that it is time to act. I rise and drift outside, broom in hand. I begin my chore moving back and forth when a sound catches my ear. I survey the scene looking for the cause of the sound. I spot it alas, perched atop my roof. “Don’t you do it, Jay Bob,” I beseech. “Please be a dear.” I finish my duty with one final stroke. I look around, satisfied with my achievement. I abandon the outside and close my door just as he lets out a jeer. He begins his destruction to my fine accomplishment. He throws sticks and leaves, the cocky little Jay. I watch my walkway become contaminated again. It will ne’er stay clean I fear.

I thought I would post some information that might help those of you out there with breathing problems.  I know all too well that it is scary when you can't breathe.  So, I wanted to give you some information that might make your life just a little easier.  Share your thoughts below- and if you have questions about the spacer or some other respiratory issue, feel free to ask below.

Mary Morrison- Aunt Ilau's Progeny

Image
Mary Lee Morrison was apparently born to Georgie Porgie & Ilau/Ila/Illa on December 11, 1926.  I say apparently because...well...you know.  The 1930 US Census records show that George was from Missouri and owned a grocery store.  It records Ilau as being from California.  Well, at least that is consistent.  Mary is recorded as being just over 3 years old. A 1947 Santa Rosa, California, directory reveals that Mary was a typist.   On March 7, 1947, the Dunsmuir Newspaper printed an announcement saying that she was going to marry Kenneth Ouimet. Then, on March 22, 1947, the Santa Rosa Republican Newspaper published a statement informing the public of their marriage license.   One public record indicates that Mary moved around Santa Rosa quite a bit. However, a 1957 Napa, California, directory shows that they had left Santa Rosa. Social Security records state that Mary was living in San Jose when she died on August 22, 1999. It would be nice to have a picture of Mary, but I am enjoying

Hiding Out In Fairview, Utah

Image
I passed through a big little town in Utah by the name of Fairview a couple of years ago.  I call it a big little town because for a place with a population of just over 1,300 it has a lot of neat stuph.  For instance, I discovered a pretty cool resort there called the Skyline Mountain Resort with a lot of year round fun stuph to do.  I even got to stay there for free because I told them I would write about them! I got to stay in a comfy cabin stocked with everything I might need.  They even had snacks out on the table!  I played in the snow and got to see some deer while I was there.   The spacious resort includes 5 cabins.  One of them has a roll-in shower for handicapped vacationers.  They also have a wide variety of other amenities including RV sites, camp sites, a 9-hole golf course and more.  Skyline Mountain Resort even contains a Residential Home Owners Community.   Visitors are invited to use the pool, which has an awesome slide.  Other recreational activities vacationers ca

Freedom Friday- Awareness

Image
Even though I did not lose any weight this week, it was a good week.  I still reached my goal of drinking more water & increased my activity as well.  I also learned some things about how my system processes what I ingest & how things affect me. I didn't like the way I felt after I ate some prepackaged food that had who knows what in it.  This will help me to avoid eating them again- even though they taste good.  It's just not worth it.  Knowing how these foods affect me is already changing the way I feel about these foods.  They are starting to lose their appeal.  I'm actually really glad I made the mistake of going off track & eating them this week because it helped me become more aware of how they affect me. This coming week, I want to continue drinking 8 glasses of water a day.  I also want to increase my activity more.  I will aim for a 5 pound weight loss.  I am confident I can do it since I won't be consuming any more processed foods.  I am still happ

Why Is This Happening?

Image
So, I went in the McDonald's bathroom the other day and discovered that there was no soap to use to wash my hands- GROSS!  This is disgusting under normal circumstances, but we are in a pandemic.  How does this even happen?  It is not possible to get your hands clean without soap- it just isn't.  I would think that would be clearly understood after a year of hearing " wash your hands for at least 20 seconds " over the past year.

Why Daddy Hated Aunt Ilau

Image
In my searching around, I found several trees on Ancestry.com that are linked to Ila/Illa/Ilau.  There was not much new information on these pages.  The only thing I really found was a 1934 Sacramento, California, Directory showing that she was living with Georgie Porgie on Folsom Boulevard.   I used to wonder why daddy always talked despairingly about her.  I discovered why when I was about 8 or 9.  I asked him how it happened & he said Ila caused it.  He said that when he was about 10 he was riding in the car with Ila.  It got dark & there was something wrong with her headlights, so she had him sit on the hood with a flashlight.  She wrecked the car & he was thrown off.  I know, I know- it sounds wild & daddy did like to tell tall tales, but this story was confirmed by someone else so I'm pretty confident it's accurate. Ila had three daughters, so we will move on to them next week.

Revisiting Utah

Image
When I was posting about Utah several weeks ago, I had lost one of my flash drives that had a bunch of pictures of Utah.  I am so happy that I found this flash drive! There are so many pictures on it that I want to share with you.  Utah actually has some pretty awesome stuph in it.  I saw a frozen lake for the first time in Utah.  It was so cool. There are a lot of other things I want to share with you about my trip through Utah, so the next several Saturdays will be posts featuring amazing Utah scenery & interesting things I learned about this state.  Enjoy.

Freedom Friday- Full Steam Ahead

Image
I have a long way to go but I am happy with the results of my efforts so far.  I have lost a total of 15 pounds in 3 weeks.  I misunderstood how the Mediterranean Diet works, so I wasn't totally in line with the guidelines this past week, but that's okay because I ate healthier & lost another 5 pounds.  I made a little video to share some of the things I ate last week. I have several goals for this coming week.  Along with making further adjustments in my eating habits, I want to drink 8 glasses of water a day.  I got between 4 & 6 glasses each day last week, so I need to work on that a little more.  I also want to start getting some activity in.  I am going to start out with 10 minutes of brisk walking 3 times a day.  Kevin will like that since I will take him out in his stroller when I walk. I am going to be eating less meat next week.  I have lots of yummy stuph that will provide the nutrition I need, so I am optimistic.  I want to lose another 5 pounds this week.  N
