Grandma's Childhood Home In Sisson, California, Is In Danger

Image
The Antelope Fire in the Shasta area is threatening my grandmother's childhood home.  This makes me sad- I hope it survives this ordeal.  I know it would break my grandmother's heart to see this if she were alive.   My grandmother's childhood home is not the only treasure there.  You might recall from some of my previous posts that she grew up in Sisson, California.  That town has a cute little museum that stores precious historical memories.  A fish hatchery is also located at the museum.  It would be a shame if all of that was lost in a fire.  I really hope this little town- and the towns around it- survive this fire. All of these California towns being destroyed by fire the past few years really gets to me.  I grew up near many of these towns.  Several years ago, I almost moved to Paradise- the town that burned up in the 2019 Camp Fire.  Thinking about that unnerved me a little. I know I always tell people that half of California is always on fire, but it typically hasn&

Freedom Friday- The Journey Continues

Image
This definitely is turning out to be an interesting journey.  I have learned things about myself and had to adjust my eating several times so far.  I am totally committed to this and hope my experiences are inspiring others. Something I really want people to get from this is that things don't always go smoothly or turn out the way you expect them to.  That is why it is so important to have someone there to help out who has been trained in whatever it is you are trying to accomplish.   It would have been easy for me to get frustrated and give up with all of the twists and turns that have popped up in this journey.  I am glad I had someone there to help me figure it out.  And it's not over yet.

What Are You Eating?

Image
There are so many weird , and sometimes downright unsafe, things added to our foods.  As I mentioned in my video, BHT - or jet fuel- is put into cereal.  Well, technically it is a component of jet fuel but if you read the environmental warning alert on Pubchem's website, it clearly states that it is very toxic to aquatic life.  If it is dangerous for aquatic life, it is certainly dangerous for us to ingest. There are so many things put in our foods that are not even edible under normal circumstances.  We all really should be paying more attention to the ingredients in what we consume.  Hopefully, I didn't gross you out too much.     😂

Freedom Friday- Chuggin' Along

Image
I have not lost as much as I had hoped I would by this point, but I just keep reminding myself that I didn't gain the weight overnight.  Overall, I am happy that I have accomplished what I have.  I am feeling better & able to do more each week. I am still on track with my first big goal- to lose 50 pounds by the end of September.  I will not be devastated if I don't reach that goal, but I am going to give it my all to try to achieve it.  The important thing is I am making healthy changes in my life & I'm not looking back.

Please Help Jessica & Her Babies

Image
I found out my niece was in a really bad wreck yesterday & I am hoping to get some help for her.  She has five little cherubs & she is in really bad shape.  She has to have extensive surgery & it is touch & go.  You can find out more & help out at her gofundme page. Situations like this remind me of the words at Ecclesiastes 9:11, where it says, "I have seen something further under the sun, that the swift do not always win the race, nor do the mighty win the battle, nor do the wise always have the food, nor do the intelligent always have the riches, nor do those with knowledge always have success, because time and unexpected events overtake them all." We never know what the next five minutes may bring us.  I hope that you & your loved ones are safe & happy.

Cookie's Tuesday Tip- What Is COPD?

Image
A lot of people have been diagnosed with COPD.  COPD is basically a catch phrase for a variety of illnesses or disorders.  COPD is an acronym for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.  The four most well known types of COPD are  asthma, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis, and emphysema .  COPD can make it very difficult for people to breathe. There are some breathing techniques that those who suffer from COPD can use to alleviate their symptoms.  Pursed-lipped breathing is one of these techniques.  To pursed-lip breathe, you basically gently blow out like you are going to whistle but you don't make any noise.  This will create a back pressure that will hold your bronchial passages open so the air in your distal airways can escape.  I have demonstrated this in the video above.   There are other treatments available that help to relieve symptoms of COPD.  You should work with your doctor or other health care professional to determine what will bring the best results for you.

Great-Grandpa William Arnett- One Of Many Williams

Image
My grandmother's dad was William L Arnett.  I have posted this 1900 census record in other posts, but for completion sake I will post it here for Great-Grandpa William as well.  At this point, they had two children, Eugenie & Ila . The 1910 census shows Grandma Dolly had joined the brood & Eugenie had died. The 1920 census record reveals Ilau had flown the coop & Dolly, Laurence & David were living at home.  I posted all of this information previously, but I want the records to be tied to each individual.  This will make it easier to keep up as things get even more tangled up.   A voter registration record for Siskiyou county noted that Great-Grandpa William was a laborer.  A voter registration record for Sisson, which is in Siskiyou County, lists both Great-Grandpa William & Great-Grandma Mary . His death record states that he was born in 1871 in Lassen County.  He died in 1925 in San Francisco, California.  This is noteworthy because my dad was born in 1926- w

Utah- The Dinosaur State

Image
I never realized how many dinosaur fossils were in Utah until I went there.  I found so many dinosaur museums in Utah, one of which was in St. George.  This is a pretty cool museum.  The St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm originally opened as a historical dig site in 2000. This awesome museum features self-guided tours with pretty cool artifacts.  It is definitely a learning museum , with a variety of fun activities in different languages.  There are bones, footprints & even dino poo to check out.  Plus, it is all handicapped accessible, so anyone can enjoy the tours. If you are not able to go to Utah to see this amazing museum for yourself, you can take a virtual tour on their website.  You really gotta check it out.

Freedom Friday- Adjustments Adjustments Adjustments

Image
I am pretty happy with my results so far.  I am making steady progress in my weight loss journey.  I have lost 29 pounds in 9 weeks.  That averages out to just over 3 pounds a week.  Also, the increase in my activity has helped me not only with my weight loss but in other aspect as well.  My back is feeling stronger and I can now climb stairs without feeling like I am going to die by the time I get to the top.   Next week I plan on doing something special for Freedom Friday, so be sure to check back to see what's happening.  Better yet, click the subscribe button above so you won't miss anything.  I have a lot of fun stuph planned for the coming weeks. 😊

My Great Grandmother- Princess Leia (I Mean Mary Ada Arnett)

Image
I have known for quite some time that my great-grandmother's name was Mary.  It was only a few years ago when I first saw a picture of her.  I was quite amuse by her hairstyle.  At the same time, I was so happy to finally be able to see what she looked like.  It took me quite a while to put her picture down.  The 1880 census reveals her parents to be William & Nancy Hill.  I found this interesting because I have some cousins by the last name of Hill on my mother's side of the family.  It also shows that she had two brothers.  One was named William Oliver and the other was named Pleasant.  Some of these names may sound familiar.  As you will see as time goes on, William was a popular name in my Dad's family line.  Also, Ilau named one of her daughters Mary. In the 1910 census (you've seen this one before folks) we find Mary married to her husband William.  As if things weren't confusing enough, she had to go & marry a William adding to the William's in th

Slice Of Veyo- Utah

Image
When I was visiting Dammeron Valley, Utah, I discovered a little place called Veyo.  And when I say little, I mean little.  The population is under 500.   There is a little family-run diner there that serves up some yummy stuph.  It is called Slice of Veyo . The diner is known for its pizzas but also cooks up hotdogs, hamburgers, & pastas.  You can even get appetizers there.  I got a sandwich & it was pretty good. Slice of Veyo also has some pretty yummy sounding desserts.  I recommend stopping into the Slice of Veyo if you are ever in the area.  They can direct you to some pretty cool recreational opportunities in the area.

Freedom Friday- Ingrained Thoughts & Habits

Image
I did not lose the 5 pounds I wanted to this week, but I am still happy because I am still losing rather than gaining or even staying at the same weight.  This process has made me realize how many ingrained thoughtless habits I have.  It has been a great learning experience & I feel better now that I am making mindful choices. I hope that you are finding the little tips I give helpful, especially the need for trained help in most situations.  While I am trained in the medical field, health & nutrition is not something I have studied extensively.  I wish I could remember more from the nutrition class I took in college, but even then I would want to consult someone with further training. I am really happy with my new healthy lifestyle, and I can't wait until I reach my first big goal.

Scams Are Rampant

Image
Scams have been a problem for years now, but they have increased during the pandemic.  I get multiple scam texts & emails daily .  Please, be careful and don't fall for these tricks.  I block the senders each time I get one but more & more scammers are getting in on the action, so it is a never-ending battle.

Grandma Dolly's Siblings

Image
I have not been able to find out much more about my grandmother's siblings.  Her brother David was born in 1913 and died in 1927.  I have no clue what he died from. Her sister Eugenie also died at a very young age, which is sad.   I did find out earlier today that Ilau loved wigs, furs & jewelry & tended to enjoy a cocktail before dinner.  Hopefully, more answers will come in time.
